Interest groups

interest group Activities

What are interest groups?

Interest groups are formed by individuals from our PROBUS Club membership who have a common interest in a particular activity. An interest group usually meets periodically throughout the year on whatever schedule the group decides. Groups have no formal attendance requirements; most are at no cost and members get to socialize while being involved in the group’s activities.

This club has culture, games and sports groups.  It’s a great way to meet members, learn, discover new interests/hobbies, or get some exercise.

There is no charge to join an interest group, but some may have associated costs (e.g. venue, supplies, etc.).

To learn more about what groups are doing, please refer to the Interest Group section in the monthly Newsletter.

Interested in Starting/Coordinating a Group?

Please contact interestgr.scugoguxbridgeprobus@gmail.com.  The Chairs will help you get started and promote your group of interest.

We are currently looking for Coordinators for the Lunch Club, Cooking, and Walking & Talking groups.

CULTURE

Arts & Crafts – Coordinator Maureen Wood

If you want to discover and foster your artistry and craftiness, you have to join the Arts & Crafts group.  We meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month to create a variety of arts and crafts.

Book Club – Coordinator Wendy Bond

Members of this club are introduced to books they would not normally read.  Discussions can be lively and tend to change paths to topics connected with the plot or onto other unrelated topics of interest.

This Book Club is full.  However, you can signup to be put on a waitlist or start a second Book Club.

Book & Puzzle Swap – Coordinator Maureen Wood

Open every month at the General Meeting during intermission in the first break out room. Come in and browse.

Please donate the speaker's books that you have read and would like to pass on. We are collecting them to make sets to add to the Uxbridge Library Book Club sets. A blue donation basket can be found on the desk as you enter from the main parking lot.

NEW! Cooking – Coordinator Required

Interested in learning how to cook or share your culinary experience? We are looking for more members and a coordinator to determine the recipe for how the group will explore the art of cooking.

Live Music – All Members

Join the Live Music Whats App to explore the diversity of music this area has to offer and meet fellow music enthusiasts.

Using the Whats App group is easy to post or find out about Live music events in the area. Remember to reply and say you are going, that way others will be more inclined to join!

Lunch Club – Coordinator Zana Maksimovic (New Coordinator Required)

Are you a foodie? Then join the Lunch Club.  We meet the 2nd Friday of the month usually at 12:30pm to explore cuisines at a variety of locations in the area.

Travel Information – Coordinator Tim Casey

If you wish to learn about different places, travel tips and get inspired to travel, this group is for you.  Meetings are generally the 4th Monday of the month at 11:15 am to 1pm in the Sunroom at The Red Lion Pub (formerly Colonel Mustard's Pub), 15 Water Street in Port Perry.  Lunch is available for those who wish to purchase.

This group does take a break during the summer

Wine Club #1 – Coordinator Lorraine Ward

We meet on the 4th Thursday of the month to explore wines from all over the world (except during the summer).

Members take turns hosting. The host decides on a theme, then selects and buys the wine. The tasting is complemented by a delicious assortment of appetizers prepared by talented members. Cost is $10.00 per event.

This wine group is full.  However, a second wine group is being established.

NEW! Wine Club #2 – Coordinator Sharon O’Connor

This is a new wine group. Signup if interested in exploring wines and meeting fabulous group members.

GAMES

Board Games – Coordinator Nancy Steele

Tired of screen time?  Then join us to learn and have fun playing different board games.  We meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month from 2-4pm.

Bunco Group (Progressive Dice Game) – Coordinators Sue and Bob Armitage

Bunco is a fast-paced, social dice game where players roll three dice to score points, aiming for “Buncos” while rotating tables and partners.

Bunco has been postponed for now.

Euchre Group – Coordinator Marilyn Howe

Euchre is a popular, trick-taking card game.  We meet twice a month on Wednesdays at 1:30pm (except during the summer).

NEW! Bid Euchre – Donna Stevenson

Bid Euchre is a trick-taking card game for four players in partnerships, where players bid on the number of tricks they expect to win and the highest bidder chooses the trump suit.

Hoping to meet Friday afternoons, members will determine where games will take place.

Bower Power (Euchre) – Coordinator Joanne Drury

We are a joint interest group between the Port Perry Probus and the Scugog-Uxbridge Probus clubs.

We meet once a month on the 4th Friday at 7 p.m. (except December).

If you are interested in joining as a regular player (limited spots) and/or being a spare, please email the coordinator at interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com.

Hand and Foot Canasta (Card Game) – Coordinator Amber D'Aguiar

Hand & Foot is a fun and challenging card game played in groups of four (similar to Canasta). We play on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.  Lessons are held from 1-2pm for new players and/or for those who need practice. We continue to play from 2-4pm. All are welcome.

Kitchen Bridge – Coordinator Mary Bristow

We are on hiatus until the fall.  More information to come on how the group will proceed.

Puzzle Group – Coordinator Maureen Wood

We meet at 10 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month.  Meet like-minded people who share the love of sorting and tackling large designs.

SPORTS

Biking – Coordinator Pete Kooger

Reap the benefits of low impact exercise while biking through various landscapes with fellow cyclists.

Birdies & Bogeys – Coordinator Kim Lendvay (Port Perry Probus Club)

We are a joint interest group between the Port Perry Probus and the Scugog-Uxbridge Probus clubs.

More & more players are coming out every week & are enjoying the game, as well as the camaraderie – there is always room for more players!

We play 9 holes weekly alternating Thursday/Friday mornings 9am and rotating between 5 local golf courses. The schedule for the season is emailed to the group. Note: if you can only join us biweekly or occasionally that's perfectly fine! Please ensure you respond to the weekly email from the coordinator stating whether you’ll be joining us that week.

If interested in further improving your game, please email the coordinator at interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com.

Nature Nomads (Hiking & Outdoors Group) – Coordinator Darlene Humphrey

Rejuvenate and take in nature while discovering local trails in the area.  We meet Friday mornings for leisurely walks in nature between 1 to 1.5 hours.  If we’re lucky, we may have bird and plant enthusiasts join us and share their knowledge.

Some trails require a Parking Permit.  Uxbridge residents can register for free.  Details provided in weekly emails.

Pickleball – Marilyn Lee & Nancy Steele

What is Pickleball?  Pickleball is a fast-growing, low-impact paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Played with a partner on a small court (20' x 44') with a 34-inch net, it uses solid paddles and a perforated plastic ball.

We play every Tuesday between 1:00 and 3:00 pm at the Fields of Uxbridge (located on Durham 1 at the north end of Uxbridge).  Join the Whats App group to post and find out who’s playing on any given Tuesday.

Walking & Talking – Pam Norton (New Coordinator Required)

We meet every two weeks or so on a Monday or Wednesday morning for an hour-long walk in either Uxbridge or Port Perry.  Then we continue our talking at a local coffee shop or whatever spikes our interest.

How do I sign up?
